Getting Error code 0x80070005 when trying to back up

Original title: error codes

I was trying to back up my pc to an external hard drive when I received an error : 0x80070005. I researched this error and found a hotfix from 'microsoft help'. While downloading the zip files I received another code : 40?I am running Windows Vista and Microsoft Security Essentials.
