Below is my question. When I submit it I keep being referred to a page which is "not available".

Summary: I cannot install Windows 7 updates. Is the problem a missing “COMPONENTS” subkey in my registry (see below)?

Help!!!

I am running a licensed verified Windows 7 Professional OS on a Thinkpad w520.

Avast is my security program.

I have several problems updating

1. Windows 7 updating program tells me there are updates, shows a list, then runs but fails to install updates

2. I am notified regularly by other programs that there are updates and when I select “update” they fail do do anything.

These include Java, Avast, and Thinkvantage programs. When I try to update Java I get a message:

“The feature you are trying to use in on a network resource that is unavailable” and reports error 1714.

I have read the document at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997[/color] titled “Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows

I 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2” and have worked through Methods.

Method 1 did not work

Method 2 did not work and after running the checksur and checksurpersist both logs showed:

Found 2 errors

CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 2

Unavailable repair files:

These did not seem relevant

Method 3 ran the scan and gave the message “Windows resource screen did not find any integrity violations” and the install again failed.

Method 4 did ran but did not enable the updates

Method 5 says to look for “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINECOMPONENTSCOMPONENTS” in the registry.

I do not have a subdirectory “COMPONENTS” under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in my registry.

Is my problem that I am missing this COMPONENTS key? Please help
