wuauserv cannot start

Whenever I try to start the Windows 8 update service, it fails with error 1053: "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." The service cannot start at all. Please note that renaming the Window's SoftwareDistribution

directory does not fix this problem. I also cannot view the update history, although I was able to install updates until about a month ago.
