FPCH Admin AWS Posted March 31, 2013 FPCH Admin Posted March 31, 2013 Hello, I was recently asked to fix my brother's DELL laptop. The HDD had failed, and the system inoperable. I replaced the HDD and installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (the previously existing version of windows) from my own install media. Had the recovery partition survived the HDD failure, I would have simply cloned that and used it, however that wasn't an option in this case. The problem that I am experiencing, is that windows will not activate, saying that the key is invalid. I was told that the Windows 7 install media would work with either a retail or an OEM key, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The OEM key I am using, is from the computer it originally came from, and the only hardware change is the new HDD. I'm trying to avoid ordering an OEM install CD from Dell, as that costs money (I already have my own install CD) and takes time (why don't they have them available for download?). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
