Net framework 3.5 family pack won't install. i currently have framework 1.1. Solution?

After a recent system restore my system has been updating at leat 200 updates or so, yet, it will not upgrade the

net framework from the original 1.1 installed on my windows xp media center pc. Fix-it's etc. require version of 2.0

to work so i can never solve this easily. i recently had a detached retina and would not have the ability to

go deep into system logs. Can someone at leat offer some simple ideas I might not have tried? i could

go somewhat into the registry but that's about it for me now.
