Office 2011 for Mac - Compatibility issues with PC files

I use Office 2011 for MAC on a MacBook laptop and often cannot open Word, PowerPoint and Excel files created on a PC. Sometimes I can do a workaround to get the data to show using a style function - normal. But I cannot always see all the content.

Anyone else have this problem? Could I have corrupted software?
