Windows 8 Updates fail, plus other problems

My computer kept trying to install updates and restarting until it gave up and rolled back. I was able to install some one by one, but in doing troubleshooting it seems there are deeper problems. CryptoSys is not started and will not run when I try to

start it (everything including msconfig show up as "Unknown Publisher", none of the Microsoft Fixit programs will run, when I try to update 3rd party drivers many will not run, and install type programs and also task manager takes many minutes to finally pop

up. Windows Defender does also not start with 0x800726, but I'm not sure if that is due to multiple failed security updates. Finally, I tried system refresh and it would also not start, just what looked to be a hang. This laptop is only a few months old and was upgraded from Win7 to 8,
