I'm running Vista Home Premium on a 4 year old NEC Versa P8310. Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 2Ghz with 2GB RAM.

Windows Update has been running constantly for 2 hours and is still saying checking for updates.

When I go to http://update.microsoft.com it says

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer

When I try to the recommended reinstall or repair files it brings up

Error number: 0x80070002. The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I have tried Microsoft Fixit that says it needs to repair Windows Update, it says it succeeds but am still unable to get windows updates. I have tried renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder for it to manually reinstall but no success. Have even tried

downloading the standalone Windows Update install client, still to no avail.

I have also run Trend HouseCall, Microsoft Security Essentials and malwareBytes and they have all come back clean.

can someone please help me?
