Starting this week the PC shuts off during FULL scan, why?

I have a Gateway Laptop, 2005 vintage. /windows XP

Been working fine till this week.

Slowed way down so decided to do a full scan with MS Essentials.

It would get to C:Documents and settingsAll UsersApplication DataAOLDownloads

And then Crash, Shut off completely &amp immediately.

Uninstalled all AOL stuff, including downloads &amp retried.

Same result. Gets through about 15 mins.of scan &amp then crash.
