'Just visited a site call www shapeofdays com which says it does a

demonstration of the upcoming new flash player. I added it to my Trusted

Zone [set to medium-high+ / protected mode ON as I have otherwise scripts

off] refreshed, clicked on the area for the video and IE7 froze.

Concerned, I ran a virus scan [ClamWin]

C:\Program Files\microsoft shared\VBA\VBA6\VBE6.DLL: Virut.set1.08 FOUND

It opens a backdoor. I guess I'm "owned" ?? TG my backup USB drive is

powered off.

Oh that is what everybody wants to hear in this newsgroup. Wish you had

Ubuntu. That is why this group is called

microsoft.public.windows.vista.general !

Typical crap from the Ubuntu Marketing Department. Spewing crap again about

the TOY OS.

In about 5 years Ubuntu/Linux will have about 3.4% of the market! Everybody

rush to upgrade!

No, I wish people treated each other with respect. Writing and spreading

malware aimed at 'what-ever' platform isn't doing so.

P.S.

Oh well, the count is now up to 2. I've got two since 1996 - the other was

in 2001 when I ignored a warning to patch Windows 2000 when running IIS.

This time, even though I had a small suspicion, I decided there'd be no harm

in letting a JavaScript run. My bad. What concerns me though is that

Protected Mode is ON in the zone the page ran in .. I thought it couldn't

write outside certain folders. That's why I reported on this forum [yes, I

know it's not 'official'].

I'm glad I have the backup though.

Vista is the best thing that ever happened to Linux. I predict that the

market share will boom the next few years and when you mention Vista,

people will giggle.

Further investigation shows that this *may* be a false positive. If so my

count goes back down to one in eleven years on Windows.

If you're against malware, why the H-E-L-L do you have Vista installed

on your machine? The malware writers do it for the same reason Redmond

does: money. Respect, in both cases, has *nothing* to do with it.

Even Linux has been banged, Alias. Moving to Ubuntu onor any other wouldn't

make much difference. Was it Gentoo or RH that had it's distro code

compromised? Gentoo wasn't it? And here, I *think* the Clam Win has given a

false positive. If so, my count goes back to one in eleven years on the

Windows platform.

BTW Gentoo and Ububtu can be infected .. Ubuntu servers go down .. have a

I wasn't talking about Gentoo but Ubuntu and the Ubuntu servers got

compromised due to the fact that the IT guys for those servers didn't

keep it up to date. Besides, it was a brute force hack, not a hack based

on a vulnerability.

So, ONE case where Ubuntu was compromised. ONLY Windows boxes form herd

bots that bring you all the spam you could ever not want.

I think you're right. I was looking at a box of crunchy granola and on the

side of the box it said it had Ubuntu goodness!

Now if we can get Alias to peddle Ubuntu in Nigeria, that would sure help

out in the vista.general group !

Alias is the designated Ubuntu Marketing Department. See what they get for

being "FREE" LOL

There used to be a big demand for IBM Selectric typewriters and the

demand for computers didn't amount to much.

The infection *may* be a false positive .. but nothing's confirmed. I plan

to attempt to send the file to ClamWin. Here's the website address:

DO NOT VISIT MAY HAVE VIRUS

http://theshapeofdays.com/2005/05/11/a-demonstration-of-h264-encoding.html

There are a couple areas that demonstrate the new video. I clicked on one of

them and my IE7 froze. It worried me so I ran ClamWin and it reported

something. I hope it is a false positive. It was suggested, but I do not

know that yet.

The billionaire that heads up Ubuntu is from South Africa. Please do

your research before you put your foot in your mouth, not after.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28Linux_distribution%29

Ubuntu (official IPA pronunciation /ùbúntú/(OO-BOON-TOO) is a

predominantly desktop-oriented Linux distribution, based on Debian

GNU/Linux but with a stronger focus on usability, regular releases, and

ease of installation. Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical Ltd, owned by

South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth the name of the

distribution comes from the African concept of ubuntu which may be

rendered roughly as "humanity toward others", though other meanings have

been suggested.[5]

The most recent version, Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn), was released on

April 19, 2007. Version 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) is scheduled for release on

October 18, 2007.[6] Ubuntu aims to use only free software to provide an

up-to-date yet stable operating system for the average user.

Kubuntu and Xubuntu are official subprojects of the Ubuntu project,

aiming to bring the KDE and Xfce desktop environments to the Ubuntu

core. Edubuntu is an official subproject "designed for school

environments, and should be equally suitable for kids to use at home."[7]

A quote from the article:

Last week, Ubuntu (another open Linux-based OS distribution) has announced

that they have unplugged 5 servers sponsored by Canonicals because they had

been severely infected and now they were attacking other computers.

I guess your reading comprehension still comes in to question. You stated

that there was only one case but the above quote clearly shows that 5

servers were infected. Wow, 5 servers, that means about 23% of the worlds

servers were infected. LOL

Ubuntu/Kbuntu/Linux/Unix - a whopping 2-3% of the worlds computers. Hold me

back ladies and gentlemen. Microsoft is shaking in their boots. Just

think, in 30 years, Ubuntu/Linux will have maybe, just maybe 7% of the

market. WOW.

So you can cut and paste. Did you do all that in Ubuntu? If so, pretty

impressive!
