I am attempting to install Windows XP on a recently wiped drive as an upgrade on my HP-Compaq nc6400.

(Full Specs- http://www.cnet.com/laptops/hp-compaq-nc6400-core/4507-3121_7-31851193.html )

My primary issue is that XP cannot detect any hard drives. I've checked them over the format is correct, I've run HDD diagnostics via 3rd pary and start-up screen, but none of that is working. I've even tried new hard drives (none have a 'C' drive), but

to no avail. I can get Linux [better than nothing?] to install, so is it that further confounds things.

So the, my question is: How does one assign a 'C' letter to a hard drive? I can't do it through any other Windows computer because it already has a 'C' drive. Any solutions?

If further details are required, please do not hesitate to ask (note the link has all the system specs).
