I can't get updates for Windows security because of an unknown error. Also, I get frequent BSOD.

Okay, so like I said, when I try to get security updates, I get a message saying "An error occured while checking for updates for your computer. Errors found: Code 80072EFE Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Code 0x80244015 comes up when I try

updating Defender.

I've had this laptop (it's a Toshiba Satellite L305, by the way) handed down to me and it has a number of problems. Another quite taxing problem is that I have had frequent crash dumps. Some programs that I want to uninstall wont uninstall because the uninstall

file doesn't exist. I've installed a free trial of Revo Uninstaller Pro, and that has helped, but I still don't know what's causing the crash dumps.

One of my latest issues with the laptop is that my computer crash dumps everytime I try to open Chrome now. It was working fine, then I would get BSOD like I just described, so I tried uninstalling it then reinstalling it, and it worked fine again for about

a day, then it happened again. I feel like it may be a virus. I have also been told that it may be a registry error, and that I can edit my registry, but I know next to nothing about computers, so I may need to be walked through this.

I have AVG, and I've used that to scan the computer, and I've also scanned with defender, and both programs have only found adware. I don't really think that could do much harm. I'm not sure. Right now it seems like a big mess of problems.

I think I should also add that the laptop does not have trackpad software installed, or at least that's what it seems like. The previous owners told me that the trackpad never worked. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Any advice will help, so please leave as much as possible.

Thanks
