How can I fix error 0x80073712 for .NET 3.5 install on Windows 8 due to corrupt files?

My computer shut down during download/install of .NET 3.5 for Windows 8 and now the files are corrupt. Every time an app needs .NET 2 - 3.5, it asks if I want to install these features. I click "yes" but every time it tells me the "component store has

been corrupted." It doesn't tell me where the files are located, and when I click "Tell me how to solve this problem" the button doesn't do anything!

I've searched Google and my computer to try and find the files and delete them, but I can't. I tried enabling .NET 3.5 as a feature on my computer as per some other threads but the exact same error message as described above shows up, without any help

for how to fix the problem. I will be reverting to Windows 7 if this isn't an easy fix.
