I have been trying to install .NET Framework 4 all day, and have been following these guides to no avail. What happens is I run the installer and it gets to the point where it says rolling back .NET Framework 4 Client Profile. The green bar runs all over

the place for awhile and then it fails, because of a "Fatal error during installation." The log file shows me the following:

OS Version = 6.1.7601, Platform 2, Service Pack 1

OS Description = Windows 7 - x64 Ultimate Edition Service Pack 1

Final Result: Installation failed with error code: (0x80070643), "Fatal error during installation. " (Elapsed time: 0 00:00:59).

The first thing I did was google the error code at the end. I followed the instructions here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982, but Fix It said it was finished processing and then it did nothing and .NET 4 Client Profile was not listed in Programs and

Features. I then tried a system file check in command prompt and it came up clean. Next I disabled and re-enabled .NET Framework 3.5.1 and it didn't help. The thread here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/fatal-error-during-installation-causes-net/2837e907-d78a-4c58-a5c4-6689914ebce9

ended with a technician recommending an In-place upgrade but that apparently bricked his computer. If that is the only way to fix this issue then I am just going to do without.
