You're damn right it's growing and that's because more and more Windoze

users are waking up and turning to Ubuntu. BUT, they've been "schooled" in

the Microsoft way of doing things and bring all their bad habits with them.

Just listen to the Wintards around here who whine about and turn off UAC.

As soon as they get on a Linux box, the first thing they want is root

access to everything, just like they had Administrator access to everything

under XP. Don't blame Ubuntu, blame Microsoft that not only took some time

to discover the Internet existed and might be a useful tool, but has yet to

come out with a secure operating system worthy of connecting to the Net.

And don't forget, that thanks to 100 million compromised Windoze boxes out

there, the Internet is becoming overwhelmed with spam, spread by these

compromised Windoze boxes.

Not true. The Update Manager only updates those apps that come from the main

repositories at Ubuntu. Universe and multiverse and all other repos are NOT

automatically updated by Ubuntu's Update Manager.

The whole activation scam is bogus in that Microsoft has admitted they

know it doesn't defeat hackers or stop pirates. So what's the point?

Bill Gates is further on record nodding his approval for untold

millions of Chinese to fine with him, go right ahead and steal

Windows. Maybe someday you'll buy it. Yet untold millions of PAYING

customers are forced to repeatedly jump through loops to re verify

they paid for their copy of Windows all because the may have upgraded

their system. If such a practice isn't calling Microsoft customers at

least suspected thieves, then they need to redefine what the word

means.

 

Microsoft knows Joe six pack is too dumb to defeat their cheesy

activation scheme so they willing squeeze him to make up for others

outright stealing copies of Windows and with the founder of

Microsoft's blessing. How can anyone defends such loony practices?

that requires activation. So for every simpleton like you that don't

need to do it multiple times for all their software which can be a

Yes, I do understand how activation is keyed. (Unfortunately the

whitepaper was written for XP and I was unable to find one for the Vista

version of WGA.)

 

Regardless of that, I can't see it being much different in Vista, since

the same thing was happening with XP.

The key there is *significantly*, which is understood, but I'm not

talking about significantly, maybe even just out of the blue.

 

If you've read this paper, AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE SCENARIOS MS PUTS

FORTH, you would wonder why most people would ever have to activate more

than one time.

Casual piracy, that's a Microsoft term. By their definition, people just

copying software and giving it to friends. I believe that is barely a

problem at all. Binary Usenet is the absolute biggest source of pirated

software, and if there is 'casual' piracy going on, it's giving friends

copies of software d/l'd from Usenet in the first place.

The reality is that stopping "Casual" piracy achieves nothing because

anybody doing it "Casually" isn't going to buy a couple of hundred

dollars worth of CD anyway, they may lash out on a cracked version,

stick to what they have until the hardware falls over or get the latest

version of Linux for nothing :) Casual pirates will not buy Office or

other products that pro users may need so MS's alleged losses are really

wildly exaggerated.
