dead mouse

problem with a build

I just did an update/rebuild with a gigabyte ga990fxa-ud5 sata mb, amd fx6100 zambezi 3.3ghz 6 core cpu, g. skill ripjaws x 8gb ddr3. I retained my original hdd with xp sp3 and put in a new asus dvd burner. The system posts and loads xp, the dvd burner will function, but I am not getting an operable mouse. I can enter the bios setup to look at settings but can't figure out what to do about the mouse. I'm dead in the water! I am the first to admit that I need help. it seems as if the keyboard stops after I exit bios. I hope it is just some beginners dumb goof. Any ideas?
