We plan of using a hybrid approach where we upgrade systems that are compatible and phase out those which are not by buying new systems with Windows 7 installed. In short I would like to know if there is an easy way to look at all the networked systems (All of which are XP SP3) and report whether or not the hardware and software are compatible. Now I tried out Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit and Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. The compatibility toolkit only seemed to find windows 7 machines on our network. Either that or I just didn't see where it was reporting XP. The upgrade advisor seemed to report what I needed but had incomplete results (major pieces of software installed we not listed) and it would be very manual (end users would need to run it and send me the results).
