IE8 - "HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration"

Hello all,

I'm trying to connect a windows 2003 server running IE8 to a website running on IIS6 in a different domain, and I am getting a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error.

I am connecting from a command line of "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

http://iisserver01.uk.mycompany.com/mywebsite

When I run a Netmon trace, the capture shows the actual HTTP conversation as saying -

"You are not authorized to view this page. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied because your Web browser is sending a WWW-Authenticate header field that the Web server is not configured to accept... Please try the following: Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you should be able to view this directory or page. Refresh button to try again with different credentials. HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration.

If I F5 refresh the page it immediately prompts me with a username/password box, which then connects OK. This is expected as the accounts are in different domains.

If I open IE8 first, then paste the URL in, it works OK.

if I connect from a box running IE7, it works OK.

Anonymous access is disabled on IIS, and Windows integrated authentication is enabled on both IIS & IE8.

I don't see anything in the security logs on the IIS server.

Help would be appreciated!

Many thanks,

Dave
