why doesn't MSE prevent sleep/hibernation when scanning?

This seems to be a pervasive and long-standing question on the web. I'm sure there are scripts and things that can be written to prevent sleep/hibernation when scanning, but shouldn't this be part of the default operation of an MSE scan???
