Windows XP: Buying anti-virus program vs. using Microsoft Security Essentials for free

I am using Windows XP, and I have bought an anti-virus program for my personal use and pay 6,50 EUR each month for it. Now I'd like to know, why I am doing this? Why I pay for anti-virus program if I can get Microsoft Security Essentials for free? Is it so that my current anti-virus program is somehow better than Microsoft Security Essentials?
