The procedure entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link...

After allowing windows update to attempt to install three hardware updates the following message, "The procedure entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll", (Windows XP) appears on boot up of the system.

There were three updates installed:

AMD processor

Creative - Sound - SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio

Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Networking - Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC

During the installation there was a blue screen crash and on reboot the above message appeared followed by a second message as follows. "Error loading P17RunE.dll procedure could not be found"

Tried system restore and but was unsuccessful with the message "your system could not be restored to that point"

I should have known better than to update hardware in this manor however I am stuck with finding a solution now. The system works fine after working through the messages however I prefer to fix the problem.
