Running windows XP Version 2002, service pack 3. Current updates are installed automatically. Had Microsoft security essentials installed since approx 2010 and as I have already said i run scans and updates automatically. Anyway my dell laptop crashed the other day and i had to repair the os which i was able to do Ok and everything seemed fine except I noticed that on rebooting Windows, MSE no longer appeared in the bottom tray as it usually did. Checked programs installed and it was there so I clicked on it but it would not load so I went to the Microsoft website and tried to download a repair or update for MSE but this also failed. MSE program was still showing on my program list and so I went to the control panel and selected "uninstall/change" for the MSE program but this would not work either. I restarted my laptop and went back to Microsoft website and tried to reinstall MSE again but again error message received. As I was worried I had no protection and as I have Virgin Media broadband, I decided to install their anti virus program but again this would not install until I uninstalled MSE which I am unable to do. I feel I am going round in circles as I can't uninstall MSE and I can't reinstall it or any other anti virus program. I contacted Microsoft support and they sent uninstall fix links but again could not run these because of the same issues which seem to be to do with microsoft installer not being found. I tried to install a fix for this but received message to say that system already up to date! Is there any solution to this or am i just better backing up any important files (i already have most of my stuff on Skydrive anyway) and then doing a complete clean up and reinstallation of XP? Thanks and regards, Marty Campbell
