Lost I got new Windows thinking I could wipe the slate clean but cant because wont recognize...

My XP was having problems at one point and I had a feeling that was what caused the problem. For some reason Windows 7 cant see any my hard drives and my bios for my computer is outdated. I cant get to any kind of start up menu to update it and there is no access to the internet through the instillation process. I am very confused because the HP website told me there hasnt been any updates for my computer and that ulimately my computer is outdated and I should have drove to fries possibly try that one. I dont want to give up on this computer but, I dont want to have to keep waisting my money on Windows 7 if it doesnt work on all operating systems which It should specially for computer after the year 2004
