When I turn on task manager in XP, a snapshot view shows MsMpEng at the top of the list for mem usage (49,000K), VM size ((90,000) I/O read bytes (1,400,000,000) I/O write bytes (256,000,000). If I start from boot without accessing the Internet, I/O read bytes and I/O write bytes keep increasing. I am not doing a scan. Program msseces is also running but not impacting performance. MpCmdRun also shows up occasionally. Windows Defender is not installed. When I turn on task manager in Vista, program msseces is the only one running and not impacting performance. Windows Defender is turned off. I saw on another web site that MsMpEng is part of Windows Defender. Is this correct? Continue reading... Quote
