PC is not recognizing ipod when I plug the USB cord in.

I got an ipod touch, and it will replace my old ipod. When I plug in the USB cord, nothing is recognized by the computer. It is also not recognizing my old ipod when I plug it in now. I have other devices that use a USB cord, and they work the way they should.

Apple has told me to check with Security Essentials to see if they are blocking a driver....I am totally at a loss. Is it the ipod or is it the security, or is it the computer?

I have tried everything on separate computers, and they still don't work.
