Microsoft security essentials and email

Hello:

Can someone tell me if Microsoft Security Essentials protects your email accounts? I have a charter

account and today I had some kind of virus pop up when I opened a message and I quickly got out of

the email and ran a scan. I wasn't sure what to do. That's why I asked about MSE. I have windows 7

and this was the first time this happened to me. What is the difference between MSE and

Windows Defender. Do I need an online security software besides MSE? Thank you. Sharon
