Does anyone actually PREFER this to the "classic" Windows Start Menu?

I know there are third-party add-ons that will give me a "classic" Start

Menu, but I'm going to work with the one I have for now.

Maybe I'll figure out why the "new" way is 'better.'

The only thing the people will start doing is start pulling their hair out.

Finding things in windows 7 is akin to looking for the needle in the

haystack.

No, I don't like it at all. I use Classic Shell:

http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

Without it, I would not run Windows 7, as a matter of fact, I dual

booted Vista and Win7 and never ran WIn7 except to test various start

menu fixes. Once I found Classic Shell I deleted Vista and have been

fine with Windows 7 as my only OS.

It is actually better once its tamed. Create a restore point and start

I'm satisfied with the "Windows 7 Start Menu" to the extent that I

haven't bothered removing it and I have no shortcuts on my desktop.

I've dragged shortcuts to my favourite programmes to the Start Menu and

find them conveniently available.

I really don't understand why everyone makes such a fuss over

a menu. The new one works, you can choose whatever program

you want from it. What's so great about one over the other?

I have no preference. It works, and that's good enough for me.

If MS decides to change the menu format once again in Win 8,

I'll adapt to that. I'm old enough to have been in on the first

wave of microcomputers (that's what we called personal

computers back then) and there was no standardization of

anything. If you had ten software packages, you had ten different

key layouts, ten different ways of getting help, ten different ways of

exiting the program, etc. We had to be flexible! There wasn't even

WordStar to standardize functions. Don't be a Luddite! Roll with

the punches.

Because they like what they are familiar with, and they don't like the

I got used to it rather quickly.

The anly thing I'm annoyed if is the fact,

that clicking on shutdown shuts down without a confirmation dialogue.

Why I don't like this?

Next to toe shutdown button is the very small 'options' section, which

you have to click

if you want to

- log in as other user

- log off

- suspend

- hibernate

It happened already several times to me, that I

shut down my PC accidentally when I just anted to login as other user.

I there were any trick for that I'd be glad.

The rest of the start menu is IMHO mainly different, not worse.

Me, too. Due to a computer meltdown and subsequent replacement, I went

directly from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 (an obvious step backward).

You can imagine my joy when I discovered Classic Shell.

Right click on the button and change it to the option you prefer.

Thanks for this tip.

Well I changed it now to lock screen.

At least less annoying than an unvolontary shutdown.

Still not very ergonomic in my opinion at last with a small screen and

touchscreen / touchpen.

I'd prefer to have two level menu, but one can't have everything :-(

Since it is, ISTM, a matter of personal preference and not a factual

Someone (Seth?) posted instructions here recently on how to make a

shortcut that will do a Shutdown and another that will do a Restart.

You could create one or both of those shortcuts and then place them in

a more convenient place of your choosing.

As a matter of opinion, I think that Windows 7 is very configurable but in

rather odd ways, and it is not all that easy and obvious to find out that

things can be changed.

Just as an example, and to show how easy it is to get hold of the wrong end

of the stick, the help in Win 7 on this actual subject goes on about what

happens when you 'press the power button'. What happens on my PC when I

press the power button is that it switches it off when it's on and on when

it's off (toggles on/off to use a coinage) . I had the damn thing a couple

of weeks before I realised that they did not mean press the power button,.

they meant click on the shut down button (strictly speaking, left click it)

when the PC is on. I realise that they can't call it the shut down button

but power button is not the correct nomenclature unless they caption it

power, which would be daft, but that should have made them realise the

mistake.

Googling 'shutdown confirmation windows 7' gives quite

a few hits. One of the easiest ways to create a dialog

box on shutdown is to enable the Shutdown Event Tracker.

If your version of Win7 supports the group policy editor:

Start menu > In the Search box enter 'gpedit.msc'

Double click gpedit.msc to run it and go to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System.

Select 'System' on the left and on the right find:

Display Shutdown Event Tracker.

Double-click to open it and select Enabled.

Now when you shutdown there will be a dialog box opened and to

activate the OK button select a drop-down item.

If you haven't got the Group Policy Editor you can get the same

result by editing the registry.

Copy the following reg file into a blank text document and save it as Shutdown.reg

Right-click Shutdown.reg and select 'Merge'.

(If you have 32 bit Win7 then delete the second part of this reg file.)

(If you have 64 bit Win7 then you need both parts.)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Reliability]

"ShutdownReasonOn"=dword:00000001

"ShutdownReasonUI"=dword:00000001

This section needed for 64 bit Win7

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Reliability]

"ShutdownReasonOn"=dword:00000001

"ShutdownReasonUI"=dword:00000001
