Posted February 14, 201015 yr Ok, so after working fine for years, today my scanner suddenly took a dump and stopped working. I wasted hours going laboriously through pages of worthless troubleshooting procedures listed by Epson (the manufacturer) to no avail. I was about ready to chuck the scanner in the trash (or out the window) when a little birdy on my shoulder hinted that maybe I should look in my services for anything related to scanners. I stumbled across a service I had never payed attention to before, called "Still Image Service". Somehow it had got set to "Manual", and "not started". I switched it to "Automatic", and started it. Voila, my scanner started working! Live and learn. Apparently, in Windows 2000, if the "Sill Image Service" is not running, SCANNERS WILL NOT WORK, PERIOD. (Similar to the "Spooler" service if that's not running, no printing can be done. That's another one I found out about the hard way some years ago, after hours of gnashing my teeth and tearing my hair because I couldn't get any printers to work.) Can't computers and OSs just "do the right thing"? No, for PCs, I suppose not that would be Mac. Sigh. -- Cheers, Robbie Hatley lonewolf at well dot com www dot well dot com slant tilde lonewolf slant
