Hi Meg,

So pleased that you managed to get back here - that is an achievement in

itself! Hahaha! :)

Another, perhaps silly, question.

Have you rebooted your computer recently? Some people (me?!!) have been

known to leave a computer on .... 24/7.

Try shutting down your machine (NOT a restart). Then switch it off at

the wall socket/unplug from the wall and leave it off for 10 minutes.

Then start again. Then run another scan and see how long it takes.

Please report back with your result. Many thanks.

After reading this entire thread, Dave(BD) actually gave Meg some very good

advice along the way. He is quite helpful, imo.

Actually, no.

It wasn't "good advice" and it really didn't help Meg.

The advice given concerning archive files was more apropos.

Isn't that a matter of personal opinion? Another person told her to

uninstall her program she paid for, and BD said that was bad advice, and

gave her advice that did help.

No, not really. She should uninstall Norton. It is the reason archive scanning is slow.

Other advice was to compartmentalize scanning rather than entire system scanning.

The advice that did help pertained to disabling archive scanning. That decreased overall

system scan tim dramatically, but lowered her AV software's ability to deal with malware.

BD's advice was to elimante System Restore Cache restore points. That's like throwing out

backup sets and it removes a failsafe capability.

BD at best parrots or quotes information but he has no understanding of the information

parrots or quotes nor of its consequences or why it may or may not benefit.

Not exactly .. he mentioned that System restore can maintain an access point

for virus's and suggested eliminating old restore points that could contain

virus's saved in those old restore points ... and then creating new restore

points. He didn't suggest removing restore points altogether and forever.

He actually gave meg advice to keep her NIS since she paid for it and to

look to "winston", I believe for better advice.

Meg's problem was NOT that she was infected. It was lengthy scan times and there was NO

REASON to dump her cache !

Hi David,

Thank you for leaving me a message regarding Restore point.

I was not able to see any of the threads for last couple days.><

(They were ALL Blank! I don't know why...)

I'm able to see some messages now.

I see what you are trying to explain to me about why it's a bad idea.

As you know I'm not familier with pc, and I won't do anything to my pc

unless it's recommended by everyone here at forum.

I just want you to know I won't touch with my Restore point.

I'll make sure I'll run my "Copressed files" scan periodically too.

Again, thank you for your advice! I appreciate it.

Hello Meg - this is the 'other' Dave - BD!

I'm delighted that you have everything under control once again. I'd

like to ask you a question if I may.

You have *purchased* one of the leading protection packages available -

one which is used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

As part of the purchase price you are entitled to support from of the

very best anti-malware technicians in the business. You asked them for

advice, which they provided .....

...... now you have decided to ignore it in favour of following the

advice of people you do not know (they do *NOT* work for Microsoft!) and

whom you know absolutely nothing about.

How can you be sure that if you click on the link so kindly provided,

free of charge, by Mr Lipman, that you will not be whisked off to

who-knows-where and have your computer infected without your knowledge?

I am *not* saying that *would* happen - but what has made you trust

*completely unknown* people here on this group? Who *do* they work for

and who monitors the advice they give or checks the links which they

include in their posts? Food for thought!

Your answer will be much appreciated (by me, anyway!).

TIA

--

Dave - I noted that Mr Lipman decided not to answer my previous query.

Thank you David for the link.

However, I did not how to maneuver my post in the page I saw.

(All I could manage to see was my own initial thread)

I'm not familier with this. Sorry, I'm not good.

But I'm able to see this post for now on the web, so I'll be OK.

(My "email notification" is not functioning with this forum for months now,

maybe my luck had ran out. haha )

Thank you, anyway.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your message.

First of all, I'd like you to know just because I took an advice

from David, does not mean I don't agree with your idea..

I can see Norton thinks it is one way I can reduce my scan time,

just like you suggested. and I'm sure there are people out there

who will benefit from this suggestion.

The reason I decided to take David's advice instead of Norton's is

that, I'm really NOT GOOD AT making changes to my own pc,

such as configuring, deleting, excluding, etc...

I'm not confident doing it on my own.

I need my pc up and runnning and not worry about

messing it up myself. That's all..

As far as your question about how can I trust people here at forum..

Aw... that's becasue I never had doubt about people here.

Perhaps I'm too naive. I'll keep in mind though, that I should be

careful not just jump on to the conclusion what to do with my pc.

Thank you for your advice, Dave.

That's OK Meg it is a start.

One of the OLDEST parts of the Internet is called Usenet or the Users Network. We are in

the Microsoft Hierarchy [ microsoft.public.security ] and we are using the Microsoft News

Server [ msnews.mivrosoft.com ]. Using the news:// URL we get...

http://news://msnews.mivrosoft.com/microsoft.public.security

Which takes us here with your news client. Play with it a bit. Read about it and ask

questions. You find it is better than access these groups via http://

Multi-AV - http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

David,

Yay! Thanks to your suggestion, I was able to see all the threads.

To be honest with you, at first I was like "What is this??"

because it looked like someone's email account.

I get nervous if I encounter something I'm not familiar with..

Anyway, I apprecite you introducing me to an alternative access

to this forum.

yes... what does that have to do with Dave giving good advice to meg, which

was to keep her NIS that she paid for and to seek better advice?

Dave(BD) did tell me to read this particular thread, so I did. That's what

friends do for friends ... I see no issue with me doing that. (there are too

many people named david these days.........) You are davidL.... anyway ...

it makes not difference relating to my observation. Peter Foldes gave bad

advice to meg and Dave(bd) gave her better advice. I really don't see why

anyone should call Dave(bd) a troll simply because he gave different advice.

That's 5th grade behavior, and as far as I have read... everyone here are

adults.
