Hi PA Bear,

The Download name is "Intelligent Updater"

The link is below

*Download VERY FIRST ONE in the list*

http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95

I found out just a while ago from Norton, that

this is just a most updated NIS update.

They just wanted to make sure I have most updated one

by downloading this. but I have automatic update turned on

as well as I do manually check before the scan,

so it is not necessary if you have most updated update.

I was advised to just report my update just once at this forum,

but I would like to update you with my result since I'm writing you now.

( I will post another one for everyone

who helped me on this just so they know)

My issue is resolved at this time.

I did turn off compressed files scan and ran the scan again.

This time number of files scaned was only 66400 files

and just took 1hour and 40 minuite.

(before this, number of files were 282402 and took 6 hours to scan)

I am happy that I don't have to wait for 6 hours anymore!

Thank you for following up for me.

Bravo !

Thanx for the update.

The ONLY problem is you can miss malware by this property not being enabled.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to you all for your advises and ideas.

My issue has been resolved now on my NIS 2010.

As I was advised by Norton,

I did turn off compressed files scan and ran the scan again.

(To turn it off, go to main screen, click "setting" on "computer"

then if "compressed files scan" is ON

Turn it OFF)

This time number of files scaned was only 66400 files

and just took 1hour and 40 minuite.

(before this, number of files were 282402 and took 6 hours to scan)

As for the download I have asked Norton," what they are?"

They informed me that it was just a Updater call "Intelligent Updater"

just in case I don't have most updated update.

they want to make sure I update my NIS before I run the scan.

I always make sure all update are current everytime by manually

checking them on live update, although I have automatic update

tuned on 24/7.

I'm happy I don't have to wait for 6 hours for my scan to finish!

Again, thank you all for your advise on my issue.

Hi FromTheRafters,

Thank you for explaining to me so clearly.

(You are so kind)

Now I understand what is "X level" means.

(it's not a place, but an idea and the function)

It 's just so amazing this pc in front of me have

so much inside.

I was not familier with "files" in general at all,

but I leared a lot this time.

I appreciate your patience.

I have posted my most update with this issue

in the end of my post. I hpe you read it.

Thank you.

Hi winston,

I have my issue resolved now.

You were totally right. it was compressed files needed to be

excluded. I'v posted the result in detail update in the end of

my post.

(I was advised by someone to just update once instead

of writing to each one of you)

I hope you saw my first reply to you as well.(it continues on the same page)

Thank you for giving me an advise.

Now run Disk Cleanup before scanning and it should take even less time.

Hi David,

Aw.. in that case, I think I would run the compressed files scan

periodicaly like once every 2 month or so just make sure

my pc is clean.

It takes 6 hours, so perhaps I'll run it like overnight.

Thank you for your information, I appreciate it!

Your catching on.

Also, instead of scanning the ENTIRE system, you can divy it up.

For example

C:\windows\. Today

C:\program files\. Tomorow

C:\documents and settings\. the day after.

Hi PA Bear,

I sure will. I'll also scan compressed files periodically

to check for malware overnight, since it takes 6 hours.

Hi David,

I can divide the scan?

How do you set it up dividing files with NIS 2010?

I don't know how to choose certain files or

where they are though..

Thank you.

Most Anti Virus applications have a capbility to schedile a complete scan or you can

manually have a complete scan performed. This is called an "On Demand" scan.

However most anti virus applications have an optin to scan a folder (and what's below it)

by Right-Clicking on that folder and choosing the anti virus scanner from the list that is

provided.

When I browse "C:", I see "Documents and Settings". If I Right-Click on that I see a list

and in that list I see...

"Scan selected files with Antivir"

and

"Scan with Malwarebtes' Anti-Malware"

Because I have both Avira AntiVirand Malwarebytes' Anti Malware installed on my PC.

I know McAfee has such and entry as well as Symantec.

Hi David,

Thank you for replying to my question.

Now I understand, how you normally divide the scan by

right clicking the files to choose.

I looked at my NIS 2010, and I think they have section to

look up the list as well.

I'm still not familier with 2010 version since I have this fairly

short time (since January).

When I get a chance I will contact Norton asking

where to look up on my NIS 2010.

I apprecite you taking the time to answer my question

Thank you.

Meg,

Well done! Yes, I read your post(s) :)

NIS provides the ability to configure/schedule a custom scan that can be run manually or automatically if you'd like to break up

the scanning. Though in your case, imo, it just as easy to scan the whole unit on a regular basis..there are plenty of other non pc

things that can be accomplished in our daily lives(and usually more important) during that 1 hour and 40 minutes. I.e. It's not

necessary to become a slave to the pc or its Antivirus scanning engine/scan duration.

You have done well, Meg! This is the other Dave replying btw! :)

Maybe you noticed the post I made to '...winston' which he chose to

ignore. I said ....

"Will a scan check files/folders for each and every restore point? If

so, assuming Meg's computer is running well in all other regards, might

it be an idea to delete all current restore points (then reapply) and

see if that improves matters for her?

Just a thought!"

Maybe if *you* ask him, or one of the other gurus who have commented,

you will determine the answer.

I personally feel that it *will* make a big difference, but then I'm

simply a user like you!

My personal NIS 2006 box (packaging) says that not only does NIS

protect from viruses (which is, I believe, what NAV does) it has a

Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Privacy Control, Norton AntiSpam and

Norton Parental Control.

It also includes Antispyware.

My understanding is that the NIS 2010 is similar but uses less resources.

Perhaps if NIS is looking for *all* variants of malware, it might be

expected to take longer than a straight-forward virus scan.

Is that reasonable?

I just noticed that an extra line of text was added viz-a-viz the

slightly earlier posts. i.e.

"Same software(NIS2010), slower processor, less ram, less video"

If '...winston' is, indeed, using the Security Suite (not just AV) my

comment is obviously redundant.

I'm sorry I didn't notice earlier.

Hi Winston,

You are absolutly right, Winston.

Whenever I have issue with my pc, I freak out.

And since I don't know pc well, it's always sacry to think

I will mess them up if I try anything to fix it.

It's nice to hear from someone who knows pc

saying "Don't be a slave to pc" since it's hard for me to

think that way on my own.

I rely on my pc heavily to communicate with my

family and friends who live in other country.

I read news about my country online everyday.

But I don't want to panic when I can't use my pc.

You and everyone here made me feel that I'm not alone

when I have a problem with pc.

All the help I get here at the forum means a lot to me.

Thank you for being kind to me.

You must explain why, if a machine is operating correctly, one should not

'reset' System Restore from time-to-time.

IMO one needs only one 'good' restore point.
