Perhaps you might come back to tell me how to omitt them,

Because I'm not sure if I'm comfortable doing it myself.

I hate to make people show me how,

Hi David,

Sorry to bother you but,

I've noticed you mentioning to Winston something about CPU

above.

I don't know what is CPU. (although I did research google, not easy to

understand) and tried to locate what my CPU is.

But I was not able to find in my pc. (Windows XP)

Do you know how to locate CPU on Win XP ?

I also remember, during the time NIS was running,

It has a "gage" on NIS screen to show CPU

and it was always indicating 100% or 80%

most of time.

I have NO IDEA what this gage is or what is means.

Would you mind to tell me what your thoghts on this?

Also, I don't know if this will help, but

According to my pc sticker label on the front saids

*2.50 GHZ

*60GB Hard drive

*56K maximmum data tranfer (Fax modem)

*768MB DDR

*10/100 Mbps ethernet

I don't know what these are..

Do I need to fix my pc? I know it's old.(6 years old)

I apprecite if you could tell me any thought on this.

Thank you.

Microsoft recently put out a webpage detailing what files and locations

that they believe are 'safe to exclude' from scanning. At the end, they

mentioned that the individual AV vendors would have their own

recommendations and that users should consult them for best results.

You purchased NIS2010, and you should get what you paid for (namely

*support*). If you don't get satisfactory support from them, remove

their product and try to get a refund.

It would please me if you were to return here with good news about their

support channel.

Hi PA Bear,

Thank you for guiding me to Norton Forum.

I had hard time finding it yesterday.><

I"ll make sure I go there and post my question there.

I don't know what it is, but all my surrounding were

acting up lately.

[Email (as you probably remeber), Norton,

vacume cleaner(totally stopped working), etc]

Again, thank you for following up for me.

| Meg

OK.

Important facts...

2.5GHz is the CPU speed and chances are you have a Pentium 4 CPU (aka P4)

You have 768MB of RAM (~.75 GB RAM)

A 60GB hard disk

A 60GB hard disk of '04 is slower than Today's hard disk. Probably IDE. Today they are

SATA,

P4 CPUs are solid work horses. However most CPUs Today are Dual Core.

So if if Winston had a Dual Core CPU on a >120GB SATA drive with say 2GB RAM then

naturally, his scanning speed would be quicker.

All I can say about your PC is that RAM is cheap. It wouldn't hurt add more RAM to it.

Hi Dave,

Yes, I think Winston's idea make sense as well.

The things is, I am sooo amature in pc,

I'm afraid I don't quite understand how to.

I'm afraid I mees up something.

I was adviced to visit and post my issue at Norton Forum

by PA Bear, and I think I'll try that as well.

I'll come back here and post the result if things resolve.

(I can't say for sure how soon I will run my scan again, because

I can't wait for 6 hours again. but I will test once I start

trouble shooting tip on this)

This way, perhaps anyone having similer issue can read it.

Thank you for following up for me.

Hi FromTheRafters,

Thank you for your reply to my concern.

I see, so there are some files that is safe to skipp the scan.

I had no idea.

I did finally received email reply from Norton

just few minutes ago and they told me to "turn off"

"Compress files scan" on my settings.

According them, this will stop Compressed files from being

scanned. (I had no idea what it is but anyway)

Also, they had me download something and save it on my desk top,

But for this I 'm not clear what it does,

so I had to send a question email to them.

I will proceed with resolving this issue

once I hear back from them.

I appreciate your thought on my situation. Thank you.

Hi David,

Thank you for coming back to tell me your thoughts.

I see, so I should get more RAM added to my pc.

I sure make sure I'll do that. (I know my pc is not

much other than super basic)

Also, thank you for explaining to me about Hard drive and

CPU and other things.

I suppose, to make hard drive more updated one,

I can not add hard drive like a RAM?

I suppose I have to buy a new PC to have better hard drive, yes?

As you said,

I think adding more RAM is the first step for me.

Also,

I did finally received email reply from Norton

Hi Dave,

Good news.

| Also, thank you for explaining to me about Hard drive and

| CPU and other things.

| I suppose, to make hard drive more updated one,

| I can not add hard drive like a RAM?

| I suppose I have to buy a new PC to have better hard drive, yes?

| Meg

Yes, replacing the hard drive is NOT like adding RAM.

It is *more* complicated and unless your hard disk is full, you would not see much

benefit.

The Norton/Symantec response to turn-off "Compress files scan" is eluding to exactly what

I posted "There could be large Archive files that are X levels deep." and when I replied

to Winston...

"Did you know that scanning one CHM file can be considered as scanning 12 or maybe more

files ?

Did you know that scanning one JAR file can be similar ?"

ZIP files, JAR files, CHM files, RAR files are types of compressed files. One file is

used to store multiple files and the type, number and depth of archiving can greatly

impact an "On Demand" or "On Access" scan time.

Other ways to decrease scan times is to DUMP all files in the TEMP folders and REDUCE the

size of caches such as the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet files (TIF) and FireFox.

All you need is a cache of no more than 50MB. I have seen IE setup a cache as large as

1GB. These files are small so to fill 1GB maens *MANY* files and thus an increased scan

time.

BTW: You'll notice that "~BD~" (aka BoaterDave) hasn't provided an real information, he

is what we call in news groups a troll. Listen to MS MVP PA Bear and ignore ~BD~.

You don't have to reply to everyone with the SAME information. We all can read the entire

As for "too many files" to be scanned, that's really not true. The concept is WHAT files

need to be scanned. Some don't need to be scanned every time just once in a while.

Hi David,

You are right. I could have just post one update. haha.

I didn't know there are this many files in my pc.

and like you said some files do not require to be scaned

every time.

Thank you for your advice on my issue.

Hi David,

Oh ok, so X level is where compressed files are stored. now I get it.

Also, replacing hard drive is like

making a new car on my own, I suppose.

As a amature user, I learned to clear coolies, temporary Internet files

and so on. I like to keep my pc runnning smoothly.

My current hard drive's Unused space is 75%.

So I think I'm ok for now.

I sure will add more RAM when I get a chance.

Regarding Dave, I thought he has been helpful to me.

At least he knows about pc more than I do :)

Anyway, yes, I do follow PA Bear's advice quite often.

He is very helpful. (and so are you)

Thank you for teaching me a lot.

Glad to see that things are getting sorted out. Dave (BD) is a total idiot

and pay no attention to him. PA Bear is the opposite, so listen to him and

David Lipman and most of the others on this group.

Now you know that you can just come to these groups and ask questions. But

it would be much better if you got a news reader and had your ISP set that

up for you.

Cheers.......Heather

Hi Meg.

Just an added note regarding your x level deep understanding. David

Lipman referred to x levels, what he means is "nesting" levels. Several

files can be compressed and stored in a single file - that file can be

compressed as well and stored in yet another file with even more

compressed files. Remember those (Russian, I believe) dolls that fit one

inside the other like an egg within an egg within an egg? The AV would

have to open all the eggs nested within each other until there were no

more to open - this takes time just to get to the point where any actual

file scanning can be done.

So...x level is *not* a place, but a concept of counting how deeply

nested the actual file(s) might be.

What's the name of this download?
