Hi,

I have NIS 2010, Win XP.

To scan 320,500 files (full system scan),

It took 3 hours about a month ago. but now

for the less amount of files (282,402 files), it took 6 hours to scan today.

I'm not sure what is going on.

I'm not familier with files in general, but

I did delete a lot of music, videos, pictures and

some of my "favorites" from my pc since last month

to reduce the files, but noe it's double the time. this is strange.

I've never done anything to my files since I'm not familier with them.

Could someone tell me a tip to reduce scan time?

Thank you.

Are you using NAV 2010 to scan for virus's and malware? Uninstall NAV2010 and use

something else like NOD 32 or Avast. Norton installls a very large footprint and I

consider Norton to be a Virus by itself

Hello again Meg :)

I wonder if you will ever get back here again. I know it's not easy when

posting from Microsoft Discussions groups!

You will have noticed that Peter Foldes has already made a mistake in

thinking you are using NAV 2010 when you have, quite clearly, advised

that you are using NIS 2010.

Is there a difference? Of course! He should know that, viz:-

Quote:-

"As with previous versions, Symantec's suite offers protection against

viruses, Trojans, rootkits, spyware and malware of all kinds. Also, like

previous versions, it has a firewall, intrusion protection, e-mail

protection and Web protection. It integrates with your browser and

search engine to warn you away from visiting sites that might be malicious."

That was from the article here:-

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9137758/Review_Norton_Internet_Security_2010_checks_your_reputation_

**

Now, on to his advice:

"Uninstall NAV2010 ....."

That is not easy to do when you have it integrated within your Nortonâ„¢

Internet Security 2010 protection programme!

I suggest that you retain NIS, for which you have paid good money, and

consider advice from others before following the (bad?) advice from Mr

Foldes.

I have added another group so that you may have access to a wider range

of expertise. I am *not* a computer guru, just a user like you! Good

luck with solving your problem!

You crossposting idiot what was the reason you crossposted it to another group

needlessly. Learn before speaking or thinking that you know everything. . Tell us

what NIS contains Mr.Smart Ass. Learn and then talk

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I could not come back sooner.

(The " email notification" is not functioning for me,

I don't know why)

I defraged my PC about 10 days ago.

(Thank you for posting the link about it for me though)

I also did disc clean up right before I run the full scan.

Yes, and you are right, I use NIS (Norton Internet Security) 2010.

My PC is old (6 years old), and just wondering

if this has anything to do with it. I doubt though.

My connection is 22 Mbts cable but that won't speed up scan,

I realized afterward.

I emailed Norton last night about this as well,

Still waiting to hear from them.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your reply concerning my issue.

I use "Norton Internet Security 2010". (I don't use NAV 2010)

I'm not familier with many different anti-virus software,

since the only product I have experience with is NIS,

only becasue my first PC came with NIS and

I've been using NIS ever since.

I do feel NIS 2010 is heavier than NIS 2007 version.

I upgraded from 2007 to 2010 version, and I did notice

the difference between the two. (heavier)

The NIS 2010 is loaded with all the stuff as a package,

and I do think that is why heavier than

regular and simpler anti-virus software.

I suppose someone like me who is amature in the pc world

can put up with slow and heavy NIS 2010.

I did email to Norton about this issue last night,

and still waiting to hear from them.

Thank you.

Hi Meg,

So pleased that you managed to get back here - that is an achievement in

itself! Hahaha! :)

Another, perhaps silly, question.

Have you rebooted your computer recently? Some people (me?!!) have been

known to leave a computer on .... 24/7.

Try shutting down your machine (NOT a restart). Then switch it off at

the wall socket/unplug from the wall and leave it off for 10 minutes.

Then start again. Then run another scan and see how long it takes.

Please report back with your result. Many thanks.

Hi PA Bear,

I emailed Norton last night and still waiting for their reply.

I defraged my pc about 10 days ago.

I also did disc clean up right before my full scan.

As I mentioned in my reply to BD, my pc is old (6 yeras old)

but I doubt that has anything to do with it. (?)

If I hear from Norton, I will come back and

let you know what they said.

Thank you for stopping by to leave a message for me.

There are TOO many variables to come up with a definitive answer.

There could be large Archive files that are X levels deep.

You may have numerous files in the TEMP folders and in caches.

The fact is Norton is NOT that good any more and apperciably slows down the system.

I *strongly* suggested remving it and installing Avira AntiVir instead.

You WILL see a difference !

Meg,

NIS2010 has a smaller footprint(lighter) than previous versions but is still quite sizeable as are most suite applications. The

leanest full suite malware that I'm familiar with is Nod32 Security. The NAV component in NIS2010 is also leaner than its last 3

predecessors.

While I do understand that NIS(which includes NAV) can be real and valid concern for many systems(overly intrusive, interference

with email send/receive, etc) as well as many other malware suites..your scanning time may be more indicative of scanning folders

that are not necessary.

You could probably improve your scan time immensely by omitting a few folders. Here's what I have excluded based on recommendation

from security experts and my personal experience.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\*.*

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log

C:\Windows\winsxs\*.*

C:\MSOCache\*.* (only present if Office is installed and the installation files were chosen(during office setup)to be kept on the

machine

Norton full scan on my system was 39 minutes for approx 496,000 files.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for following me up.

Yes, I do turn off my pc at the end of the day every night.

I also turn off my pc when I'm out during the day.

I hope Norton have some explanation or advice

regarding 6 hours scan. I am still waiting for their reply.

Thanks.

Hi David,

Thank you for your reply.

I don't place my files any particuilar spot on my pc

I usually run disk clean up before my scan ever since

I found out that temp folders can slow down my pc in general.

I just purchased my NIS 2010, so I am not so eager

to get rid of NIS just yet....

But I may consider switching my anti-virus software

down the road.

I have sent an email to Norton to see if they have any

idea. I'm still waiting for their reply.

Hi VanguardLH,

Thank you for you reply.

I didn't know Symantec has news group. and

Yes, I will check on Symantec newsgroup next.

Thank you.

That seems like good advice ...winston! :)

Remind me, will a scan check files/folders for each and every restore

point? If so, assuming Meg's computer is running well in all other

regards, might it be an idea to delete all current restore points (then

reapply) and see if that improves matters for her?

Just a thought!

From: "...winston"

| Norton full scan on my system was 39 minutes for approx 496,000 files.

I'm sorry, just comparing number of files for a given time frame is insufficient. There

are many underlying factors such as...

* Amount of RAM

* Number of other program stubs loaded

* Resource load

* Speed of hard disk

* CPU type and speed

* OS

All of these are factors as well as what type of files are being scanned.

Did you know that scanning one CHM file can be considered as scanning 12 or maybe more

files ?

Did you know that scanning one JAR file can be similar ?

I appreciate you answering, Meg. Thank *you* for your feedback.

'...winston' gives good advice. You will no doubt see my note to him.

I suggest you act in accordance with his suggestions.
