Only local access, no internet

I'm at my mom's place, and I can't access the internet on my Vista

laptop. Her XP one works fine. I've seen that this is a common

problem, but haven't seen a working solution. I tried a few of the

regedit ones, such as disabling the IPv6, but that didn't work for me,

and still showed the 6 running in my network settings. This is a

direct connect too, not wireless.

 

I figured I could get the IP info from her computer (subnet/gateway/

dns) and put that in mine for the automatic IP but that didn't even

get hte initial local connection to work. I used her IP address,

maybe that's the problem. Does anyone know of a solution that came

out or how to find what IP address I should be using?
