You're too used to the Microsoft world. Most (well, anything but

Vista) other OS's will run their installed set of applications at minimum

spec, and may even be capable of more. That's even true of XP: I regularly

install XP Pro on machines of the PII-300 vintage and it's perfectly stable

and useable.

A concientous software vendor would provide a compatibility

layer, work vigourously with 3rd party vendors to ensure that drivers

were available, and keep the old system available until the new one was

properly supported.

Hmmm, well, to borrow a page from the MS apologist's book, you've

done something terribly wrong. Not only are current linuxes actually sold

on hardware at that level, but the recommended minimum is far below what you

have. I suggest that you RTFM.

Most complete? Yes. Best? No. They accomplished that support

simply by leaving all the old cruft in place rather than by replacing it

and providing an interface layer.

Hello dear DORK

The future has nothing to do with windows.

It's the cloud, decentralized computing with low cost machines running thin

clients based on linux.

That's the future.. windows is a dinosaur that will die.

That's not true at all. You can easily verify that for yourself.

A PII-400 using a 8MB video card and 256MB will run XP just fine, and

even play games that were current at the time such as quake.

Don't be silly.

However, Slackware and CentOS run happily on my Thinkpad 755's,

which are 486/DX 50's. 32MB of ram, though, since I've scrounged parts

for them over the years.

Remember, linux will run on a 100MHz embedded ARM processor.

You are more of a troll than I. You insist on glorifying a faulty product

Look on google and see how much people "love" (im saying this ironically of

course) vista.

I don't hate vista, heck I use vista, but I have full understanding of its

qualities and shortcomings.

I run XPsp2 on a PIII-600 with a 64MB Geforce400 and 384MB RAM and it

runs...but is real laggy. My son hated playing CS on that PC .

And god help you if you do an AV scan ... useless PC for 20 minutes.

And that setup is with ~ 12 running processes and using ~70MB ram post

I am not always right on everything, but in things like this where I have

researched them for endless hours and have personal experience not only on

my machines but others as well, and when I hear the same story from

everyone..

well I must be right. You even see microsoft trying to figure out how to

make people accept vista somehow...

Its wasted time, all those stupid advertisements, and mojove experiments

will have no effect, they should hurry up and make windows7 as best as

possible fixing all vista blunders,

and give a super good discount to people upgrading from vista.

Ah! I see so basically what you want is that Vista should run on the

same machine that ran Windows 95. Great! I think we should tell Intel

and all other hardware manufacturers that you know what, people don't

want to buy any new hardware, all they need is softwre that can bake

cakes and make toasts but if you tell them to buy new hardware they

can't do it.

They want software that can multi-task run Adobe PS CS 3 watch HD

movies browse Web 2.0 sites all on a 486.

Mike's Window - My Blog..

http://msmvps.com/blogs/mikehall/default.aspx

I didn't say that. I said MS should give a good price for those upgrading

from vista to win7 as a plead for forgiveness for the mistakes they made

with vista.

HOWEVER....

Im sure you got your copy of vista for free.. didn't you ? Hmmmm?

the truth now! lol

Yea, and rest assured it didn't run under Windows. It wouldn't have

even made it 10 feet off the launch pad if Microsoft wrote the OS

code.

But they couldn't play solitaire.

Nor could they carry on their printer and expect the device drivers to be

auto-detected.

Counter strike is a fairly recent game, isn't it? Lots more

demanding than quake.

I'll repeat the standard line: you did something wrong. My hobby

is refurbishing older systems for non profits. I've installed dozens of

XP systems on P300 class hardware, and with the exception of program load

times and gaming they function comparably to any XP client. In fact,

much of the raw material I get is old Gateway/HP/Dell systems that originally

had XP installed, on low end PIII's or old Athlons.

Fixed size swap? Replace that old 6Gb Conner, too. And you should

turn off all that useless UI stuff like font smoothing.

More recent.

Doesn't seem graphically much more complex.

The OS is trimmed down , tho I may give the UI some thought.

The real issue is I have relitively fast systems that I also use (the P3 is

a Gateway my wife still uses).

If I had nothing to compare it to...it would appear to run pretty good.

The OS does little in that first 10 feet.

The fuse was lit...and a huge explosion took place.

I propose that even Alias could accomplish that with a Bic lighter.

I am going to some pII's away for non profits too...

Do you have any tips for making them work a bit better before I see them

off?

My wife's 6 year old Gateway notebook, which only has 512 MB of RAM, runs Vista Basic just fine. If it was running a preinstalled version, if there was one, it would more than likely bring it to its knees. I'm going to put XP back on it, but only because there are no Vista drivers for her webcam.

I'm still waiting for any of your smart-ass fanboys to explain how is

it open source software which costs nothing typically works while

Windows which costs hundreds of dollars constantly crashes.

If controlled by Windows it would have had a BSOD and flamed out.

This is how "good" Vista is:
