Windows 95/98/ME zone alarm question

I have ZA version 6.1.744.001. When I tried to update to more recent
versions I experienced all sorts of problems. This version seems to work
well, but I was wondering if there is some compelling reason to abandon
it in favor of some other firewall.

Any ideas?

Yeah, I use Sygate PF, but get Kerio PF, v. 2.15, it's highly recommended.

Zone Alarm v.6.1.744.1 is the last version that supports Win Me, or
rather, that can be installed and work with relatively few problems.

Whether you need to change firewall rather depends on what problems, if
any, that you are experiencing with Zone Alarm v6.1.744.1. You are losing
little by not being able to upgrade unless you are in to "security
suites". I'm not and prefer to use individual components rather than
suites.

You could try Kerio Firewall 2.1.5 from:-
http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/files/keriopf215.zip
whilst it is still available. Hen's teeth?

It's now obsolete and has been withdrawn from Kerio, but it was (and still
is) one of the best Firewalls for WinMe. Google for it and see the various
reports (and those of its demise)

Compelling reasons? - Probably not, except it's a lot smaller, works with
XP, ...

Hi Richard.....

I have disabled ZAPro 6.5.722 simply because I didn't like the bloat it
had become. If you are using WinME, then I do believe you should stay
with Version 5.....do not upgrade it.

I have never used any firewall but ZA and frankly, I run without it
because I have a default one with XP. But in my book, the older
versions of ZA and ZAPro worked superbly.

You could, of course, buy a router and that would protect you. I have
one of those sitting here unused as well (VBG).....I like to live
dangerously. I only got it to network my old WinME and for my daughter
to use with her Mac Laptop. I think my old WinME had bitten the dust,
but will get around to rechecking it and getting Mike to help me out.

click on the "Systems Requirements" link and you will get a pop-up window
that in part states:

"... Check Point will cease to support Windows 98/98SE/Me with the
introduction of our version 6.5 ZoneAlarm family of products ..."

"Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating
system."

If you look at FileHippo.com's ZA Free web page (
http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/ ),
you will see that v.6.1.744.1 is the last pre-v6.5 version listed, and
therefore, I *assume* is the last version to support Win 98/ME.

I thought you were using that router Heather, you should, it will give you
another layer of security even if you only have one machine attached to it.

We run the latest ZA here on our XP machines but it's the older one on the
WinME machine all going through the router. If you have ZA set to
automatically check for updates it will bring up a dialogue box when there
is an upgrade for the program but knowing the WinME machine is running with
the latest it can use I just keep putting the remind me later mark to as far
as possible then forget it again <g>

Re ZA on your WinME computer, untick the box for auto checkups. I
always had mine set to Manual, as I recall. Not about to reinstall it
just to see, grin.

I first bought a Dlink when I finished this box and could never get it to
work properly, even with the assistance of my ISP!
I took it back and bought a Linksys and have never had a problem, from the
installation on. Needless to say, Dlink has been crossed off of my list!

I used ZA for a time off and on and when updates came out it would
break ZA or a clean install wouldn't work, often it would make windows
unusable and would have to reinstall.
If a firewall gets updated often It's difficult for me to trust it. I
don't use windows very often but through the years I've come down to
outpost free as the firewall of choice and what I trust. Outpost free
is not supported but is still offered for download. It's pretty basic
and that's what I like. Just block it from connecting to it's home,
casuse it only wants to sell you the paid version.

I use a 4 port Linksys router/switch. I called an 800 number to Linksys for
setup and they walked me through, simple as can be.

I don't see any reports on AVG so l will mention our experience.

I bought AVG 7.5 for a big $60+ last November and it includes a
Firewall which I guess I don't need (Computer is behind a Router) as
well as spyware.

I'm still here so I guess it works but it is verbose compared to ZA.
The AV was reporting false positives with a few really old files. I
run with SysMon turned on most of the time as I find slow downs
associated with UDP processing which, surprising to me, seems to
relate to EBTBDEMON which I'm sure is part of an Ebay toolbar. I think
the toolbar is a good tool though I have yet to make much use of it so
perhaps it would be wise to dump it.

More than anything else, when my ZA subscription expired back in late
summer/early fall, I felt the reminders were excessive. I communicated
some with ZA and did not get the warm fuzzy I used to when reading how
they would (mostly wouldn't) support winME. In contrast, AVG's says
their latest version ( 7.5 ) continues to support winME.

Even so, have had some goofiness for a week. More about that in a
separate post. And Mike M has given some good arguments for dispensing
with UDP but AVG may be using it in their update processing?

Not UDP but rather I would think, UPnP, universal plug n play. Used by
applications to open paths/port map through the router and then close when
not required. If not too paranoid considered by many to be better and
perhaps more secure than setting up permanent port mappings. Personally I
use it extensively but one needs to be aware there is a malicious flash
file going the rounds that attempts to use UPnP to open up router mapping
to allow malicious apps access to systems.

I don't know but think it unlikely that AVG uses UPnP when updating but it
may so some experimenting may be called for before disabling UPnP. I
can't comment as I haven't used AVG for several years now.
