I’m sorry about taking so long to respond to Andrew E’s advice to me about my
problem(Yet another “No Sound†problem on 8/8/2008), but there’s too much
stuff at home & work distracting me.

Uninstalling & reinstalling everything under ‘Sound, Video, and Game
Controllers’ in the device manager gave the following results: Video & Audio
Codecs, Legacy Audio & Video Capture Device, and Media Control Devices -
these drivers disappeared and wouldn’t come back Realtek AC’97 Audio driver
- the device manager says that the driver is enabled but not functioning
properly. Further probing into the AC’97 properties turned up the message
that a WMD driver couldn’t be loaded because it could be missing.

Fooling around some, I went into the control panel and looked in ‘Sound
Devices’. No sound, recording, mixing, or MIDI devices were listed. Going
into the ‘Add Hardware’, I was able to get back Video & Audio Codecs, Legacy
Audio & Video Capture Device, and Media Control Devices in the device
manager. I tried 4 different WMD drivers - Creative EMU 10K1, Crystal MPU401,
Microsoft MPU401 MIDI, VIA AC’97 - and the device manager indicates that:
‘This device cannot start.(code 10)’ & ‘Cannot load the (insert WMD driver of
choice) driver. The driver file may be missing. Try reinstalling the driver…’

Also of note: When installing the Realtek driver & the various WMD drivers,
I always get the RUNDLL error box message: ‘Error loading streamci. The
specific module could not be found.’ When clicking the OK button on the error
message, an identical message reappears except it is now streamci.dll. This
will occur about 6 - 8 times before the message stops popping up.

My system came with a ‘Dual Core Update Disc’ for a system recovery disc,
but this is what I used when I did the system restore that led to this no -
sound problem. And when I use it to specify where to look for audio drivers
(via ‘New Hardware Wizard’ or ‘Add Hardware’), I get the message that the
required data wasn’t found.

Sorry for the procedural faux pas. I stumbled upon the solution to my problem
which I'll post in my original thread just in case anyone else has that
problem.
