Yellow Shield system tray icon

I've had a few times when the yellow shield icon will appear for just
a moment upon startup. I have a feeling it means nothing. When it's
time for auto updates, that shield icon works normally for me.

No, you have some security issues.
Assuming you are running XP SP2_
