Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum section but there seems to be no obvious alternative.

I've become increasingly frustrated with Yahoo. The reliability of the service has been poor recently and I have had long periods of being unable to send or receive email including a period of about 48 hours fairly recently. On top of this the company has made a policy change so that now, when account users, for whatever reason, need to send an email using a non-Yahoo server, they will find the email gets returned unsent. With my Yahoo address previously being my default email address when visiting websites, it became increasingly annoying to find that, when I used a website's email contact facility and completed an on-line form, the email would be returned unsent to my Yahoo account inbox.

OK so I was using a free email service that had worked pretty well for quite a time but this was all too much so I have closed my Yahoo account and opened a new account with Outlook.com and, so far, I am very pleased with how it is working out. This looks like something very good from Microsoft and it's free. My only problem (and it's not a fault with Outlook.com) is that, despite being informed of my email address change, some commercial organisations are still emailing me at my Yahoo account. Yahoo keep an account open for receipt of emails for 90 days after closure - the time is ticking away so I expect there will others getting returned emails.

I have had numerous issues with Yahoo email for the past year.
I finally switched completely over to Outlook.com, as well.

Many of my customers have also been complaining about their Yahoo mail.
I have never had a problem with my Outlook account.

Thanks Bill and Cindy,

Very reassuring - seems like I made a good decision. I don't know what Yahoo are playing at but I guess they'll lose a lot of account holders with Outlook.com as such an effective alternative (I didn't fancy GMail so Outlook was available at the right time for me).

Cheers.

I have had a lot of problems with yahoo. It takes forever to load and sometimes my mail won't open. I keep getting a popup that says if yahoo mail is taking too long to load, try yahoo basic mail, click here. I am ready to give up on yahoo. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one with yahoo problems.

Vote with your feet - walk away - perhaps Yahoo will get the message if large numbers of dissatisfied account holders did that. I've had years of not faultless but still pretty good service with Yahoo but lately it's been a nightmare. Have a look at Outlook.com, I'm very pleased with it so far - it works well with the Thunderbird email client too.

I have a yahoo account as well, but I have not used it often so I really didn't notice any issues and I was thinking about using that one as my main email account. I also recently got an outlook.com account as well so I think I will use that one as my main account going forward everyone seems to like it and recommend it.

I have had my Hotmail (outlook) account since 2008 but I didn't use it as my main webmail until about a year ago.
I was able to import all of my Yahoo contacts, folders and email successfully.
It's spam filter is so much better than Yahoo's ever was.

Hi Iceman,

Yahoo servers have been down a few times this year which was inconvenient but the killer for me was their change in policy regarding anti-spoofing (i.e. emails disguised to look like they originate from a particular account but actually come from another). While I would commend action to stifle the action of fraudsters and spammers, Yahoo has seemingly come up with something that is causing many problems for their genuine account holders. If you only use your Yahoo account directly from the Yahoo website you will probably not notice anything but the Yahoo policy change affects those who, for whatever reason, are using a non-Yahoo server. I usually access emails via the Thunderbird email client and, in recent weeks, have had emails returned.

In nearly all cases the returned emails were the result of me completing contact forms on a website, giving my Yahoo email address for the reply and submitting them. When I copied the contents from the returned email into a new email I then sent from another non-Yahoo account I had no problem. I found some interesting information at the following web address when I did an internet search about my problem:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2141120/yahoo-email-antispoofing-policy-breaks-mailing-lists.html

I don't know why GMAIL is not liked as well. In 8 yrs not one issue.
Has Filters and I read every email without actually opening.

I am returning to this thread as, even as late as it is after closing my Yahoo mail account, my Yahoo mail address is still open. I closed the account back in the early part of the year so the possible 90 days that Yahoo claimed might pass before the address closed for incoming mail has long passed. In the light of Yahoo's recent declaration of security lapses, dating back to 2014, I am disgusted at the possible risks I still face.

Today, after receiving an email from Yahoo last week concerning reviewing my security options on the supposedly closed account, I opened the Yahoo webmail page and was able to log on to my account. I changed the password, emptied folders that contained any mail received since I closed the account and cleared the contacts list. The SPAM folder contained well over a hundred items of seemingly obnoxious content from the nature of the headings (all received well after the date that Yahoo 'confirmed' the closure of my account and likely relating to their security lapse). Even as I was editing my account two more SPAM emails came in. The SPAM folder was emptied at once.

Another problem with Yahoo is that they appear to make contacting them as difficult as possible but eventually I managed to find an on-line contact form. I await their response with interest.

Certainly I would never consider going back to Yahoo. I believe that they are irresponsible, lackadaisical, morally corrupt, offer appalling service and a disgrace to the information technology industry. Can you tell I am angry?

I had an email reply to my Yahoo on-line contact form request. As you have probably guessed, the response was useless. The email was of the 'Do not reply to this email type' and the content did not help at all but only listed links to the Yahoo forum, Facebook and Twitter etc. I don't want or need that kind of contact, I want to deal with a real person who understands the nature of the problem and can do something about it. I have now sent a letter to Yahoo's Dublin office (which covers the UK) via the postal service and have logged on to my supposedly closed account and gone through the account closing process once more. The closure has again been confirmed by an automated email and a new 90 day period before the account is removed from the Yahoo register has been activated. I wonder if any of this will work.

Update:

Yahoo Mail is clearly unfit for purpose. Customer Care Services exist only in name and not in practice - Yahoo's practice in not allowing meaningful contact between customer and company is deplorable and deliberately obstructive.

My letter to Yahoo's UK and Europe office in Dublin remains unanswered as does a later letter I sent to the London office and a further letter I sent directly to the the Managing Director of Yahoo! UK Ltd (Mr Nigel Clarkson) after the previous letters were ignored. It seems the malaise that is evident in Yahoo's customer care permeates right through to top management.

I have contacted the Communications and Internet Adjudication Scheme (CISAS) to which, I believe Yahoo! UK Ltd is a member, so hopefully that body will stir Yahoo into positive action. If this has any affect, I will report back.

Technically my account should be fully closed and de-registered on 18 January 2017 after I went through the closure process once again in September 2016 but as it should have been finally closed (i.e. after the 90 day de-registration period) sometime in July 2016 or thereabouts but remained open due to inefficiencies and incompetence within Yahoo, and was hacked while supposedly closed, my faith and trust in Yahoo is at a very low level.

Certainly there is no way I could recommend any Yahoo services to anybody if my experience with the Yahoo! UK mail service is anything to go by.

I feel your pain and aggravation, Kick.
What is really annoying to me is, if you do not log in to your Yahoo mail account at least once every ninety days, they automatically de-activate it.
Yet when you want your account closed, you must jump through hoops to try and get it shut down, only to no avail.
