XP won't start after brown out

Greetings,

Last night I was running my brother's computer in Safe Mode so I could
access My Computer, etc as it is a bit clogged up with protection,
Norton, Window Washer, Spy Sweeper, and maybe even McAfee. I had just
loaded Shell Extension Viewer (Thank you, R. McCarty) and made sure
that I could run it from cmd line but had not yet disabled anything
with it. Walked away for a few minutes and a brownout occurred, room
lights very dim, monitor off, and disk access light on steady. Yup, no
UPS.

Window startup fails. Will not start in any normal or safe mode or
last good config. Last thing that appears to load is Mup.sys before it
cycles again. I assume we need to boot from Windows CD/DVD but how
would you proceed from that point?

I can't help you with your question, but I would suggest that your
brother and you both get uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). I have
survived several power brownouts and blackouts over the past few years
and, thanks to my UPS, I have had no trouble. In my opinion they are
worth the money.

Depending on the version of WinXP you have, you might be able
to perform a "repair installation". Boot the machine with your WinXP
CD, then select "Repair" when prompted.

Yep, mighty handy but my computer and UPS are in TX and I am stuck in
northern VA.

They have other uses too. I was watching a football game when the
power went out. After sitting in the dark for a few minutes the
lightbulb in my head finally came on. I went and got the UPS and
powered up the idiot box and got to watch the end of the game.

Looks like we're hosed as he can't find the disk. MS decal is on top
of the machine. MicroCenter says they can restore it for $30.00 but
their process destroys all files. Data backup costs another $60.00.
Since it only needs repair would it be possible to use another XP disk
or would it gripe about the key?

You can use any WinXP Home CD, provided that it is of the
same type (i.e. OEM or Retail).

About your data: Welcome to the club of those who do not
believe in regular data backups. Sooner or later you will lose
the lot - there are many posts in this newsgroup about this
very subject.

I doubt very much that your neighbors can replace your
holiday snapshots or your accounting files in case your
disk suffers a melt-down. Happens all the time.

Not a problem. Important stuff is on thumb drive too. The boot process
starts and it loads a whole page full of routines from disk so at
worst case I believe I could mount it a 2nd drive and recover a great
deal if it became necessary.

"Believe"? Believing is not a term I use in a backup
process. Either a backup process has been tested
with a sample recovery or else it has not, in which
case it is close to useless.
