I recently upgraded my motheroard from a 915 chipset to 945 chipset..
Everything in my system works fine except that the new board is not able to
connect to the internet.. I replaced my 56k dialup modem with another of same
make and model but the same problem.. The modem dials in xp but automatically
disconnects after a few seconds.. Its says that the remote computer did not
respond.. But when I reconnect my old board it do connects through the same
modem.. I use the lastest chipset and modem drivers and my board and modem is
new.. Telephone line has no problem and I use Windows XP professional.. I
tried connecting after a fresh install of xp with service pack 1 and 2...
Both gives the same problems... Somebody Help me out.. Is there anything I
can do with xp to make it work??

Try running Query Modem
To test a modem

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators
group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to
a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing
this procedure.

1.. Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
2.. On the Modems tab, click the modem you want to test.
3.. Click Properties, click Diagnostics, and then click Query Modem.
Notes

a.. To open Phone and Modem Options, click Start, click Control Panel, and
then double-click Phone and Modem Options.
b.. This procedure sends standard AT commands to your modem, and displays
the responses that indicate features supported by your modem.

I've seen that same problem a few times...
I ended up solving it by simply getting a different brand of modem.

I have no idea why some otherwise working modems simply do not work on some
installations.

A few things to try, just as a test:

Look in the Device Manager for a conflict. Try disabling any COM port
listed in the BIOS. Move the modem to a different slot. Move the sound
card to a different slot. Remove the sound card.

Actually only about 24 threads though the first two pages suggest there
are 155:
