XP to win 7

HDD died and need to replace. PC had XP which I upgraded using Win 7 Upgrade disk. Question can I reinstall XP on the new drive and then use the original Win 7 Upgrade disk. I'm assuming that I can as the PC has all original hardware except for HDD and that Win 7 will see it as a reinstall on the same PC. Am I correct in this assumption?
