Is this a clean install? Are you booting from the install disk?

What kind of disk is this? Full or Upgrade?

I guess I misunderstood. I had thought you were trying to install the
operating system!

I now assume you only want to install the Service Pack. But I'm not sure
why it would check the Product Key. To others following this thread: Is
this normal behavior?

I would try disconnecting from the Internet and then disabling your
antivirus program before installing this update. Then reboot, and then
re-connect to the Internet. And a cleanup and defrag would be a good
idea at this point, too.

Just out of curiosity, do you have broadband? If so, you may want to
just try the regular SP2 online download/update.

Instead of downloading SP2, can't you just use Windows Update? If you
have broadband, it shouldn't be a problem.

We need more information then.

What version of Windows XP are you currently running? Home or Pro? Which
Service Pack? (Right-click on your desktop's My Computer icon and select
Properties. What does it say?)

Which URL are you using for Windows Update when you try to upgrade to
SP2?

What exactly happens? What is the exact error message?

Gotcha. I simply Googled "checking product key" and got quite a few
hits. From:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...read/thread/8348b083f8126b43/8f6995eb5e4028cd

(and
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=648466&SiteID=25 )

This worked for me (recommended for a Dell laptop, I have a Vaio):

1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe )

2) Then type cd /d %windir%\inf and make sure we are in that
directory.

3) Then type ren oem*.inf oem*.old, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

4) Then type ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see
the files in the folder.

6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it
to desktop (by copying it to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1
from c:\windows\inf.

7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and
start the installation of SP2 and it should go fine.

(and be sure to press Enter after typing *each* command)

Good luck!

If you still have problems, I suggest you post to
microsoft.public.windowsupdate.
