Starting only recently (unaware of any changes) XP Search immediately
responds "Search is Complete - There are no results to display". It
does not look of course, but I have no clue what happened to break it.
Indexing has always been turned off. Suggestions to fix it are very
welcome. Thanks.

Not really a fix but AFAIK WinXP Search is "broken" out of the box. I've
used it to search for a file that I know exists (I'm looking at the file).
Search result says "There are no results to display".

Not broken here.

Might be an example of the old adage: "Garbage in, garbage out."

Try AgentRansack (free). Better all 'round than "Search."

Give an example of a search failure. Files and folders? Internet search?

Local files. Entering any file name known to exist, like picture.jpg

It is 1000GB of disk and any search now finishes immediately, no time at
all, and says "Search is Complete - There are no results to display".

Always worked fine before (and slowly, with indexing turned off), until
recently. Unaware of any change, other than it broke.

Have you changed the search parameters at all such as limiting it to a
specific folder or drive ? Try resetting all the limiting parameters and
restarting the search companion . You could also try turning indexing on
temporarily (for a few days) and see if that helps .

What do you get if you search for 'picture' instead of 'picture.jpg'? Do you
mean 'all files" instead of 'local files'?
