XP Reinstallation problem - starportlite.sys could not be found

I have a Dell Dimension E310 with Windows XP Media Center on it. Due to
errors I've been getting that imply some of the operating system files are in
a bad state, I got the Dell-provided XP Reinstallation CD and chose the
Upgrade option to reinstall the XP operating system. The pre-install process
ran fine and it then rebooted the PC. While rebooting after choosing the
Windows Setup boot option, I get the error "The file starportlite.sys could
not be found".

Then I have no choice but to exit setup because it says the setup failed.

After booting to the normal XP Media Center that is installed, I searched
and found this file in two locations on the C: drive:
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT
C:\Windows\system32\drivers

The next time I rebooted, the boot up process again asked me if I wanted to
boot to Windows XP Setup or to Windows XP Media Center. I chose XP Media
Center and it booted up. The computer apparently still thinks it is in the
middle of an XP install when it reboots even though I did tell it to exit the
setup process after it got the starportlite file error.

Any advice on the "missing" file and the hung up set up process? I would
really like to get the operating system repaired.

Help?

Thanks.
