I re-installed XP pro over itself (After April 8th) and it said it needed to be Activated/validated and then asked YES or No.
So when I selected "yes" all I got was a background screen and my pointer... nothing else.
I finally found I could at least get to the start button in Safe-mode (with NO networking).
So I called the MS Activation hot-line.. and the guy there gave me a VERY hard time.. so I practically begged this person to get me to a Tech support person. .. which he finally did.
A girl there at tech support (in the Philippines)
Gave me a line of code to enter at the start-run line:
rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk
then reboot...after reboot to normal mode...That brought my desktop screen back.(yea)
but we still could NOT get the activation-Validation screen to appear.
Clicking on Accessories, system tool, Activation-validation... still nothing appeared.
She tried another start-run line of code:
%systemroot%\system\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
But that didn't help either.
All she said to me at that point was to try a re-install again from CD and call back... I begged her not to desert me.. but she said it would take 1/2 hour and I needed to call later...which I did... but was given the "run-around" by guy in India who refused to help!
In the mean time I noticed that I was at SP-2
So I found and installed SP-3... installed but no change.
But I finally I found a PERFECT clue to the answer in another TIP on-line.
It relates to MIE-8
Seems MIE-8 has to be working correctly to get the "Activation" screen up.
So the TIP advised to go into the Windows folder and remove the MIE-7 and MIE-8 folders.
Then it said to get MIE-8 working again... but didn't explain how.
So that was actually the answer!
I removed both MIE 7 and 8 folders and rebooted.
When I shut down it said there were 55 updates to reload automatically.
After the 55 updates loaded... MIE-8 was there again fine... AND THEN... YES!!! ..the Activate Windows screen came up when I clicked on it in Accessories, System tools, "Activate Windows".
That screen asks if you want to activate one of 3 ways: ( on-line, or by phone, or later)
I chose "by phone"
I called the automated line and everything worked perfectly.
The system came up fine!
The only last remaining problem now is that the ADD/Remove programs list has most of the "remove" buttons missing. A few programs that I JUST now loaded DO have the re-move button but not all the rest.
Cannot find a solution to that after two days trying all tips... to no avail.
