HI,

I have just added a 300GB external HD and formated it, but for some reason the
file list in explorer is in blue. Why is this?

Thanks

You have XPs on the fly file compression enabled, there is an option to
check when your format the drive to do this.

To disable, right click on the root of the drive and deselect it and
confirm you want to aply to all files and folders. Obviously make sure
you have enough space on the drive to store the data already on it in
uncompressed state.
