Hi,

I have an Omni external case with a 40GB HD in it. When attached to my XP box
it is fine, no messages just the usb join sound and it is fine, however..

When I attach it to my wife's XP, I always get the Add Hardware Panel when i
boot up with it attached.

I select the Recommended find drivers but it never does so I have to cancel out.

Why does it do this? How can I stop it doing it?

Thanks

Rock

Dunno - one of these unexplained silly things with windows. The first time I
connect a USB pen drive to Linux, it just opens it - the first time I
connect the very same pen drive to an XP machine (but not ALL XP machines -
explain that!) it goes into the "new hardware wizard"! How STUPID is that?

Yes true!

I wonder if anyone has an answer and also...
whether or not the following message...'It may not work blah blah blah', is true?

You are not connecting through a usb-hub on her machine, are you? s

The simple answer is don't attach the box to your wife's XP.

The problem source, though, may be the USB hub, as another poster has
pointed out, or that the needed driver is on your machine but not hers.
You may need to do some Google searching to see just what the "needed
driver" is.

Yes thanks.

I have the driver disk but is says not to use it for the XP only for 98. The
instructions also say that it will just connect automatically with XP as it
does with my box but not hers.

I go straight from the ext case to her mobo connection at the back.

I'll keep trying I guess..

You could take a look at the follow web page: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html

Uwe Sieber seems to have a lot of "trouble shooting" tips for USB
devices.

Maybe you can answer a question for me. I never understand why people
connect removable external devices that weren't meant to be connected until
the OS is done opening. Why?
