Would the version of XP on a machine with a Dell 160 OptiPlex
motherboard be different than a standard Windows XP (Home or Pro)?
I am wondering if a standard XP disk would install and run okay on
that motherboard.

Well, Dell's OEM installation CDs are specifically designed to install
only on Dell hardware, as an anti-piracy measure, and usually contain
the necessary device drivers specific to the model Dell for which
they're intended. So, yes, Dell's OEM CDs are different from any other
computer Manufacturer's OEM CDs and the generic retail installation CDs.

If by "standard" you mean a retail WinXP installation CD, certainly.
You will need to download and have ready to install the proper device
drivers for the motherboard's chipset and any other integrated components.
