XP not recognizing SATA drive

I have installed a SATA drive, but cannot get XP to recognize it. In
particular, Device Manager sees it and says it is working properly, but
Computer Management/Disk Management does not show it. It shows my two
IDE drives, my CDR drive, and DVD drive. No SATA device As far as I
can tell, I have the latest BIOS and drivers installed. I have looked
into the BIOS Settings and cannot find anything there. Other places say
I must format it before Windows will find it, but how can I format it if
Windows can't find it? Thanks.

Did you install a SATA driver for the SATA drive controller? The SATA
drive must show up in the BIOS before XP can "see" it, unless the SATA
port is a SATA RAID port. Check with the motherboard manual or
manufacturer's web site. You need to install a SATA driver since XP
only is "supposed" to see Intel based SATA controllers.

Yes, the SATA driver is installed. Why does the drive show up in the
Device Manager list but not the Disk Management window?

The Device Manager says that the controller and the device are
functioning properly.

99% of all boards have SATA &/or RAID turned off by default,you need to
enable the controller in the BIOS (advanced chipset,integrated peripherals,or
similiar)set for IDE & SATA.For more

You've checked mobo jumpers Sata jumpers are correctly set and that your
sata drive is connected to the correct port?
Your Bios setting for serial ports are corretly set?
The above is explained in your mobo manual

In Hardware devices check SCI & Raid Controllers is Sil 3112 sataraid
listed?
If not I believe you will find you need to create a floppy containing the
raid/stata drivers
Si3112r.mpd
TxtSetup.oem
Si3112r.inf
Si3112r.sys
SIISUPP.vxd
Then undertake a repair installation of winxp using the F6 option early in
the process to install third party drivers from floppy

state " Drives connected to the Sil controler do not support none raid
function"
So my initial thoughts would seem to be irelevent
Unless possibly Sil driver has been update to support a single sata in JBOD

The only BIOS setting is for boot sequence - I do not intend at this
time to boot from this device.

There is a jumper on the MOBO to enable/disable SATA. The jumper is set
to enable. I have tried the disable position and the HDD and controller
do not show up in Device manager. It is currently set to Enable.

The controller is listed and is functioning properly.

The hdd also shows up under disks and is working properly.

I have downloaded and installed the latest version I can find. These
are version 1.0.0.33.

I have looked at some other places and it looks like others are using
only 1 drive.

Well I can only go by the Asus tech doc;
If others are using a single sata on this specific controller you need to
speak with them.
Because hardware devices recognises the Controller, it doesn't mean the hard
drive will be available to disk management, which tends to be borne out by
the Asus doc

I figured it out. The hard drive was locked (whatever that means)
probably because it was used on a Linux system. I used the WD
diagnostics on the UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD - a geeks requirement). It
showed the hdd as locked. Further investigation revealed another
program on the CD - HDAT2 - will fix that. I unlocked the hdd and XP is
formatting it as I type. I want to thank all who took the time to try
