How did my operating system change from the XP Home Edition to "Whistler" and
how do I get back to the XP Home Edition? As it is now, I can only get my
desktop icons in safe mode.

Create a new Profile with the User Accounts app in Control Panel. Import your
old profile data to the new account.

Thanks Mark but the new profile didn't work and I wasn't given a OS disk when
I purchased this piece of crap 6 yrs ago so I can do the repair.....needless
to say, Microsoft won't help because the OS was on the HP CPU when I
purchased it.......and HP won't help because they say they don't have to ....
they won't support anything over 4 yrs old.....so now I'm left with finding a
reasonably priced XP OS disk and code and starting from begininning.....I'm
OK with that....thanks again
